Château Giscours was named a Third Growth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, before the appellation of Margaux was even officially created. Over the centuries, this historic estate has maintained a reputation for excellence, and during our visit to Giscours in May 2024, we were incredibly impressed by every aspect of production from vineyard management with organic viticulture; their commitment to biodiversity and 'gentle' winemaking practices (such as on sulfites used in winemaking until very low amounts in the final blending to simply stabilize the wine); sustainable actions such as on-premise vegetable gardens and livestock on their farm; maintenance of a huge park and meadow.... it goes on and on! Giscours even provides housing on the property for all of their employees. This place is magical, and so are the wines.
This vintage, 2010, is considered one of the top all-time vintages by Giscours, which they are hoping will become as mythical as the epic '1970'. We were struck by how all the wines at this estate have a style which is 'very Giscours', meaning: full of flavor and complexity, silky, refined and balanced, fresh and aromatic, dense yet elegant, very precise in its expression of 'Margaux', and finally, remarkably approachable in youth, yet capable of aging for years or even decades, depending on the vintage.

Giscours shows an initial character of great style and elegance. The shining fruit and concentrated tannins follow, making it both a seductive wine and one with a long-term future.

Aromas of mint and currants with hints of fresh herbs. Then turns to plum jam. Full body, with well-integrated tannins and pretty fruit. Long and caressing. This is really outstanding.

Whereas 2005 has the power, 2010 has power and elegance combined. The nose has a dark fruit, floral and mint complexity, the palate a firmness but finesse of tannin and plenty of fruit, zest and freshness. The energy is apparent, the finish long and clean. It's a wine that should age gracefully over a long period of time. The 'as good as it gets' pick.

Features a lightly firm, singed alder frame around a core of dark plum, cherry and cassis bush notes. Taut tar and warm paving stone notes fill in on the finish. Shows serious, well-embedded grip, and the core of fruit is spot on. This has the range, length and cut for the cellar. Best from 2014 through 2030.

The 2010 Château Giscours is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot picked between September 27 and October 14. I contrasted this directly against the superb 2009, but I still maintain that this has the upper hand, albeit in a different style. The aromatics are very focused with black fruit, violets, fig and mineral scents that are very well defined. But you need patience - this is not as immediate as the previous vintage. The palate delivers, delivers and delivers brilliant delineation and poise, more freshness than it knows what to do with, an intensity that is supremely well focused and length in the mouth. There is even a dab of mint chocolate making a surprise appearance on the aftertaste. This is a very impressive Giscours.

Fully saturated ruby-purple with inky highlights. Captivating nose of cassis, violet, gunflint and aromatic herbs; this struck me as being very dominated by its cabernet component. Fresh, rich and dense, with palate-staining flavors of dark berries, coffee and cocoa complicated by ink and graphite. Very complex and long, this vintage appears to be a major achievement for Giscours and one of the best wines from this estate in years.
