A legendary estate in Gevrey-Chambertin producing Burgundy wines with ultimate purity, finesse and expression of terroir, Domaine Armand Rousseau is sought after by the most serious wine collectors in the world. There is not enough wine to fulfill all of the global demands, so we cherish every precious bottle of Rousseau wine that we receive at the Bottle Shop. Ranking with the most elite Burgundy producers such as Romanée-Conti and Comte Georges de Vogüé, Rousseau produces impeccable quality wines from vintage to vintage. Each of the domaine’s prestigious holdings are in Gevrey Chambertin, with the exception of Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St. Denis. The domaine controls a remarkable 8 hectares of Grand Crus, including 6.25 acres in Chambertin and 3.45 in Clos de Bèze. Rousseau owns 5.5 acres in the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques, which accounts for 40% of the total acreage, and 100% of the 2.5-acre monopole, Grand Cru Clos des Ruchottes. These elite holdings contribute to the domaine's allure.

This silky red gives an initial impression of purity, with a core of cherry and strawberry fruit, accented by sandalwood, vanilla, stone and white pepper notes. Intense and fluid, showing fine harmony and excellent length. Smoke and mineral details grace the aftertaste.

(25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky nose combines purple fruits, mocha, brown spices and game, along with some subtle earth notes. The sweetest of the 2016s to this point but also fine-grained and elegant, with its intense fruit and soil flavors nicely frames by lively acidity. Very rich, dense and alive. Offers a classic Clos de la Roche combination of fruits, spices and soil character. 92-94

Reduction dominates the nose but I doubt that it will last as nuances of fruit are 'visible'. The broad-shouldered flavors possess even better size, weight and mid-palate concentration while offering fine power and drive on the sappy, complex and balanced finale. I very much like the overall sense of harmony though again, at least moderate patience is strongly advised. 92-94

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, orange zest, vine smoke and loamy soil, Rousseau's 2021 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vibrant, with powdery tannins, bright acids and a long, mineral finish.
