Ethno Saperavi hails from the ancient winegrowing country of Georgia near Ukraine and Russia. Georgia has been producing wine for over 8,000 years, and today is experiencing an exciting period with young, talented wine growers and winemakers wanting to show their quality wines to the world.
The most widely planted grape of the country, the Saperavi grape is native to Georgia, and found throughout Russia and surprisingly in the Finger Lakes of New York as well. Medium-large dark blue berries produce deep reds known for aging. This hardy grape is known to handle extreme cold weather and fares well in high altitudes.
Ethno Saperavi is made with the very old qvevri method (see photo below) and from grapes that have been organically grown. The wine has a deep, intense, purple color with excellent viscosity of texture. Rich and complex on the nose – black currant, new leather, plum, spicy notes and hints of dark chocolate. It is a full bodied wine with full yet smooth tannins and a gentle acidity with a long finish.
