Established in 2004 by owner and winemaker Chris Brockway, Broc Cellars is a Berkeley-based natural winery that makes refreshing and approachable wines for everyday drinking. Chris Brockway’s winemaking journey began with California Zinfandel. The spicy, brambly fruit style drew him from his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska all the way to California. What he found, however, was that California wines had changed to fit the “bigger is better" mold of the time. Personally, he felt it was all too much – high alcohol, too big, too much everything.
Chris believed California wine could be different. From a single barrel in 2002 to now over 20 different wine releases a year, Broc Cellars makes fresh California wines to enjoy anytime. In 2023, Broc Cellars extended their vision of simple and ethical winemaking into the vineyard as new owners of Fox Hill Vineyard, an organically farmed 60-acre site planted to Italian varieties in Mendocino County, which brought us this white, 'Got Grapes'.
'Got Grapes' is made of 100% Cortese from Lost Slough – a 300-acre vineyard in the river delta area of Sacramento’s Clarksburg AVA. It is unusually cool for its location and very rich with minerals as the vineyard was once below sea level and still contains many shells in its sandy soil. Whole clusters were foot stomped and then pressed to stainless steel tanks to naturally ferment and age for 5 months. This wine was left unfiltered and unfined. 12% abv.

So mouthwatering and pure, this California white is hopefully part of a new wave of fresh, clean, natural whites coming from the West Coast. Made of a drought resistant northern Italian variety named Cortese, which is the grape in the famed Gavi wines of Piedmont. Melon, citrus, white flowers, salty stones... this is truly delicious.
