Silver Oak Cellars was founded in 1972 by Raymond Duncan after visiting the Napa Valley in the late 1960s. The rugged beauty of the place and the fledgling wine industry led him to buy acres and acres of orchards, pastures and vineyards throughout the Napa and Alexander Valleys. He became partners with winemaker Justin Meyer and Silver Oak was born. Like a fine European house, Silver Oak further ages their wines in bottle at the winery after aging them in oak, in order to make the wines more ideal for drinking upon release. As far as food pairing, think great American steakhouse fare; or for a decadent treat, grill up hand packed Kobe beef burgers and top them with melted Truffle cheese from Italy.
Typically made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Silver Oak Alexander Valley is was first produced in 1972, and was the winery's first Cabernet Sauvignon, even before they made a Napa version. Seven years later, they harvested the grapes for their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon which is now produced as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals.

The 2021 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley was harvested between 4 September and 8 October. The blend comprises 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After blending, it was barrel-aged for 24 months in American oak, 50% of which was new, followed by 14 months of bottle ageing prior to release. The wine is beautifully layered and highly fragrant, with remarkable precision and focus in this vintage. Medium- to full-bodied, it integrates the hallmark Silver Oak American spice character through cedarwood aromatics, elegant whispers of vanilla bean, and nuances of fresh fennel (from more refined American oak barrels crafted after precision trials of both seasoning and toasting from the American oak cooperage they own in Higbee, Missouri). Supple dark-cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by graphite minerality, violets and clove, building in richness and complexity across the palate. Suave and silken, the dark-berry fruit is wrapped in a tapestry of velvety tannins, gliding to a focused finish of brown baking spices and crisp, clean acidity.

The dark ruby-colored 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a beautiful smoky, espresso bean, and kirsch-scented nose. On the palate the wine is rich, round, dense, and full-bodied. This stunner is open-knit, boasting lower acidity but undeniably appealing richly fruited flavors. Hints of chocolate make an appearance in the wine's stunning finish. Bravo for a great 2021!

So full-bodied, ripe and robust, offering spicy, iron-like, black fruit aromas, with generous dark cherries on a firmly tannic palate. Concentrated black plum, graphite, black pepper, coffee bean, pine resin and oak toast flavors on a full body. The tannins are powerful and fine-grained, shaping the texture significantly at this stage. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.
