“I wanted to make wines following the classic, artisanal traditions of Burgundy and Bordeaux. The first time I stood on the steep, rocky slopes of Mount St. Helena, I knew we had found the place to do it.” SIR PETER MICHAEL
Peter Michael started the wiinery in his own name in 1983 with a singular vision: to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. Today, the estate makes fifteen wines in four varietal categories. All but one are estate-grown in P.M. mountainside vineyards, and all are crafted by hand and in limited production. The Estate is guided by the patience that good wine requires and love and respect for this land. These are the values that shape everything at Peter Michael.
Intense orange blossom, lemon custard, and jasmine burst from the glass of the 'Belle Côte'. This highly aromatic bouquet continues with rose petals and lychee underlain by orange marmalade bass notes. The rich entry and dense mid-palate show the depth created by the estate's oldest Chardonnay vines. Hints of orange peel, pastry, and lemon curd lead to a long, polished finish. Belle Côte can be enjoyed in its exuberant youth or after decades of cellaring.

An eastern-facing slope on white, dusty soil, this vineyard is the latest of the Peter Michael Chardonnay vineyards to ripen each year. The site is planted mainly to Old Wente and See clone selections with a little Rued clone. Planted in 1990, these are the oldest vines on the estate. The 2018 Chardonnay Belle Cote opens with earthy notions of crushed rocks and chalk dust over a core of fresh apricots, Golden Delicious apples and honeydew melon with a fragrant touch of jasmine. The medium to full-bodied palate is both intense and refreshing, not skimping on the silkiness of the texture and delivering a good, long, zesty finish. 3,151 cases were made.

The 2018 Chardonnay Belle-Côte from the oldest vines on the property (planted in 1990), possesses dazzling mineral intensity to match its mid-weight, delineated personality. Lemon peel, pear, mint, white pepper and sage all develop in the glass. The clonal mix here is See, old Wente and Rued, with the floral top notes of Rued (that recall Riesling) especially evident, even if Rued comprises the smallest part of the blend.
