Originally a property of the Medici family, Fattoria di Sammontana has an adjacent Romanesque church from the 12th century, where the monks from San Lorenzo in Florence, stayed as a place of rest and retirement, and built a large underground wine cellar and grand furnace for the production of pottery and terracotta. In 1867, the main building along with the church, furnace and farm were purchased by Michele Dzieduszycki, a Polish nobleman whom loved spending his vacations in Tuscany.
Michel's son, Maurizio, who specialized in art and Renaissance literature, married an Italian woman and thus came to reside permanently in Tuscany. It was then Maurizio’s son, Massimo, who directed the farm to excellence in quality wine and oil production. Today, the family - now in its fourth generation - runs the farm according to organic and biodynamic criteria, with the intent to fully preserve and sustain the traditions and winemaking secrets of this land.
The wine here is the most typical and traditional wine of the Sammontana estate. A classic young Chianti: fresh and lively, light to medium bodied. As with all of the wines at the estate, is is made using organic and biodynamic viticulture. Made of Sangiovese 90% and Canaiolo 10% planted with the vine training systems of Guyot and “cordone speronato”, and vines aged 15-40 years. The harvest is 100% by hand and yeasts are indigenous. Average annual production: 20,000 bottles.
