The historic Quinta do Ataíde consists of beautiful organically farmed vineyards and olive groves in the Vilariça Valley. Formed by the parting of the Iberian tectonic plates, creating a flat basin flanked by granite escarpments, this valley has unique soils consisting of loam and schist, with neutral Ph and the vineyard is drier and hotter than most of the rest of the Douro valley. As a result, the Quinta benefits from unique conditions for viticulture and a terroir not found elsewhere in the Douro region.
The Quinta was the site of the rebirth of the now-iconic Touriga Nacional in the 1970s when Miguel Côrte-Real grafted cuttings from pre-WW2 vines. The Ataíde vineyard is fully organic. The dry growing season limits the growth of competing vegetation and reduces the risk of vine and grape damage. No herbicides are used and wild grasses are controlled with the use of handheld trimmers and tractor mowers.
As a result of these growing conditions and terrain, the Quinta do Ataíde Estate Wines are a very specific expression of a Douro DOC wine and indigenous grape varieties. Symington produces two wines from the property, the Quinta do Ataíde estate wine and Vinha do Arco, made entirely from Touriga Nacional. Both wines are made in their specialist winery and aged in French oak barrels for 10-12 months.
The Quinta do Ataíde estate wine is produced from a Douro blend in which the Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca stand out. It is a surprisingly fresh and structured wine that reflects the Vilariça terroir and its specific climatic conditions. The Vinha do Arco is named after the mature Touriga Nacional vineyard from which it is entirely sourced. It is a distinctive wine with high aging potential, pleasing citrus notes and hints of violets, reflecting the character of this famous grape variety and this particular vineyard.

Planted in the 1980s, when Touriga Nacional was a neglected grape variety, this parcel within Quinta do Ataíde has produced an exceptional wine. Full of tannins, richly textured and dense, it is also piled high with swathes of ripe black fruits. Drink this powerful wine from 2021.

A big red, with a focused, muscular profile packed with blackberry, tarragon and licorice notes that are accented by black pepper, floral and plum tart flavors. The mineral-infused finish is backed by firm tannins. Drink now through 2028. 750 cases imported.

The 2015 Vinha do Arco (Quinta do Ataíde) is a Touriga Nacional aged for 12 months in 70% new French oak. It comes in at 14.3% alcohol. Far more personable and aromatic than the regular Ataíde this issue, this has a big blue-fruit nose followed by a bit of vanilla. It shows off mid-palate finesse-nothing jammy here-thus becoming more suave after that attention-getting burst of fruit. As with the previous year, it is lighter styled but focused and precise. It finishes with grip and a velvety feel to it. It also finishes dry, notwithstanding the good fruit. Apart from the personality, this is most notable when compared to the regular Ataíde for its better structure. It has a real backbone, although the tannins are not hard. It is still approachable now, but it will be better next year for sure. It should hold reasonably well, but take that in stages and check in every now and then. Unlike the regular Ataíde, this should overtake its 2014 counterpart as time goes on. Drink Date: 2019-2030.
