Château Laforge takes its name from the trade of the previous owner. He was a local blacksmith who accumulated a lot of prime land as payment for his services. The vineyards were purchased in 1998 by Jonathan Maltus, who was establishing himself with his quality-driven efforts at both Château Teyssier and Le Dome. Prior to being purchased by Jonathan Maltus, the vineyards of Château Laforge were assembled over decades, creating a patchwork of various terroirs.
Today the vineyards of Château Laforge are planted to 92% old vine Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc in a myriad of locations that range from just outside the village of Saint Emilion, close to Château Grand Pontet, while other parcels are situated near Château Monbousquet. Because no actual cellars for Château Laforge exist, the wine of Château Laforge is made at Maltus' other well-known property, Château Teyssier. The modern cellars of Château Teyssier move wine by gravity flow and the vinification takes place in temperature-controlled wood vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine of Château Laforge is aged in 80% new, French oak barrels.
Laforge is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes and earthy mushroom and baked potato side dishes.

Lots of graphite, spice box, chocolate, and both currant and blackberry fruit emerge from the 2015 Château Laforge. This medium to full-bodied, ripe, powerful Saint-Emilion has plenty of tannins and will benefit from short term cellaring, but it's seriously good.

The 2015 Laforge has come along very nicely since I tasted it from barrel. The oak - which was distracting en primeur - is now beautifully integrated. A dollop of Cabernet Franc (8%) gives lovely aromatic lift to the sweet red cherry, plum, mocha, savory herb and floral notes. A wine of total harmony and class, the 2015 will drink well right out of the gate. Laforge is a blend taken from the three main terroirs in Saint-Émilion: clay over limestone, gravel and sand.

The 2015 Laforge, a blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with exuberant cassis and plum preserves notes with touches of spice cake, Provence herbs and lavender. Medium to full-bodied and rich, it gives lovely plush tannins and a great core of ripe fruit, finishing long.
