Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. The roots go back to 1992 when Dave, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines. Near lifeless, he nurtured them back to health and was rewarded with small parcels of fruit that he made into wine. Dave was also able to secure a contract for the supply of grapes from a run-down but ancient Shiraz vineyard. He managed to raise enough money to share-farm the vineyard, which has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The Torbreck endeavor is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Dave also produces small quantities of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne for white blends.

The Steading has wonderful fragrancy, purity of fruit, mid-palate concentration and a savory tannin profile. Vibrant aromas of violet, star anise and spice all unfold to reveal an impressive array of underlying fruit flavors. Silky, succulent dark fruits, black olive, savory earth, licorice and Asian spice notes abound. These complex yet elegant flavors are all neatly interwoven with a balance of acidity and supple, silky tannins. The Steading will continue to develop with time in the cellar, and provide those with patience great enjoyment well into the next decade.

A focused laser beam of pure plum and apricot fruit flavors are succulent and fleshy, giving way to details of gunpowder tea, violet and palo santo. The tannins are fine-grained and polished, showing presence on the long finish. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Drink now through 2035. 132 cases imported.

The 2017 The Steading offers consumers a mid-priced chance to sample the Torbreck style. A blend of 51% Grenache, 25% Shiraz and 24% Mataro, it matured 18 months in a large foudre. Black cherries, anise and cracked pepper all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and rich, marked by flavors of plum, dark chocolate and spice cake. All those elements linger harmoniously on the long, velvety finish.

This red blend is polished and a little flashy but, alas, it's hard not to fall for its charms. The oak comes first with vanilla and mocha, then the ripe plums and blueberry fruit, and lastly, swells of savory, earthy spices. The palate is sturdy in frame but silky in texture.
