Ca’ Rome’ was established in 1980 by Romano Marengo, a simple, honest man with a great passion for wine, grapevines and his native land. This family-run winery is the realization of one his biggest dreams: after spending 30 years working in the wine industry, his dream became a reality he now shares with his wife Olimpia, and children Giuseppe (known as Pino), Paola, and Maria.
Romano taught them his methods, passing on his ways of thinking and his main objective: the production of quality wine. Giuseppe continues his father’s efforts, carefully managing every phase of production, beginning with the selection of the grapes from historic vineyards owned by the family and located in Barbaresco and Serralunga d’Alba, the latter having been inherited from grandmother Maria di Brün. Paola manages the sales side with tireless energy and a smile that comes from an innate optimism. The passion with which she transmits the family’s values – quality, honesty, respect for tradition, exploration, and an international air – and the company’s mission is immense.
Olimpia, extraordinarily dynamic, is cultured, practical, and embodies the soul of the family she dedicated her life to, which is also reflected in the cellar and the products. Today Ca’ Rome’ covers 17 acres under vine, managed by the Marengos. The vineyards are partly located at Barbaresco, partly at Serralunga d’Alba, in Barolo territory. There are three crus: the Rabajà cru, the Rio Sordo cru, famous for Barbarescos of great finesse, and, in Barolo territory: the Serralunga cru, renowned for structure and magnitude.
This Barbaresco Chiaramonti has an intense garnet red color with complex aromas and notes of licorice. Velvety and full-flavored with a long finish.

This red is all about pure cherry, strawberry and rose aromas and flavors, highlighted by hints of eucalyptus, tar and tobacco. Though elegant, a firm backbone of acidity and tannins lends support. Shows fine length and harmony. Best from 2022 through 2040. 330 cases made, 50 cases imported.

The Ca' Rome' 2016 Barbaresco Chiaramanti shows a pretty garnet or ruby color and deep fruit tones of wild cherry, plum and black currant. This is an intense and nicely fleshed out expression of Nebbiolo that offers elegance and power in equal measure. This vintage does not show the tannic astringency that I found in the 2017 vintage (also tasted at the same time), and I much prefer this wine.

The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Chiaramanti is a dark, potent wine. Black cherry, smoke, leather, menthol and spice give the 2016 a feeling of virile intensity. The 2016 is not especially refined, but it sure packs quite a punch. Here in a Riserva version, the Chiaramanti is a powerful, tannic wine that demands cellaring.

Red-skinned berry, leather, balsamic aromas and a toasted note lead the nose. The brawny palate offers Marasca cherry, raspberry jam, vanilla, sage and espresso alongside vigorous acidity and the heat of evident alcohol. Grainy tannins give it a drying, astringent close.
