The Michel family has been cultivating their passion for tradition and the Chablis terroir since 1850. In the mid-20th century, the family stopped making wine in wooden barrels in favor of stainless steel tanks to create clean, pure, and precise Chablis without adding woody flavors that could mask the Chablis flavor and minerality. Through this philosophy, combined with limited yields inspired by organic wine-growing techniques, the domaine has developed a worldwide reputation for fine wine. A firmly-rooted sense of excellence is passed down from generation to generation. Louis Michel & Fils has always been a family business and is managed today by Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel.

This excellent Premier Cru Chablis is from a parcel planted in 1964 that is one of Louis Michel's best Chablis vineyards and one of our favorite Chablis wines : VAULORENT! Vaulorent is a very special parcel within a very special vineyard named Fourchaume. The famed Fourchaume vineyard stretches over an uninterrupted 2 miles, with the exception of an enclave on one of the Grand Cru slopes. This wine comes from this very enclave, known as 'Vaulorent'. All the factors come together here to make the finest Chablis wine: a pure nose and a voluptuous mouth coated with fruit, minerals and velvety texture.

"The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet of yellow flowers intermixed with crushed limestone and light flinty scents. This is very well-defined and focused. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and elegant, with a dab of lemongrass towards the lightly pithy, persistent finish. Surprisingly classic in style, given the warmth of the growing season. Excellent. 91-93

A riper yet more elegant nose reflects notes of white flowers, pear and oyster shell. The succulent, round and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely, even seductive, texture while delivering good depth and persistence on the slightly fruity finish. I suspect that the fruitiness will progressively dissipate with a few years of cellaring.
