Made from vines averaging 40 years, with the oldest at 70+ years, this beautiful premier cru Beaune Les Epenottes is one our favorite wines from this high quality domaine. The Parent sisters are serious growers whose estate certified organic by Ecocert since 2003 vintage . Located in Pommard, in the heart of Côte d'Or, the domaine is run by Anne Parent and Catherine Fages-Parent, representing the 12th generation, and perpetuating a family tradition dating back to the 17th century.

Burgundy is made up of small vineyards up and down the Côte d'Or, some with premier cru or grand cru status. This wine is from a premier cru vineyard with a unique classification due to geography. One of the best, most sought after premier cru vineyards in Pommard is the Les Epenots, which rests on the border between the villages of Pommard and Beaune. In fact, part of the vineyard straddles into Beaune for a brief stretch. This part of the vineyard is composed of the same exact soil, aspect and terroir, yet it gets a new, feminized name – Beaune Les Epenottes. The wine is amazing, but even better, Les Epenottes typically goes for half the price of Les Epenots. Complex Burgundy indeed, but with a huge payoff, and this is the wine we are offering here from a top quality domaine.

The Les Epenottes plots of Domaine Parent are planted on complex soils made of clay and limestone, on marl hills of the Oxfordian age, on dolomitic limestone and red clays, especially on the Pommard appellation, which helps Pinot Noir grape variety expressing its power and elegance. Very expressive and elegant, this "climat" is situated on the verge of Beaune, on the Pommard side. It produces a wine combining the delicacy of the first and the intensity of the second. This is delicate yet intense with red berries, flowers and wisps of earth on the finish.

The 2017 Beaune les Epenottes 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 47- and 85-year-old vines, made with 5% whole clusters and matured in 40% new French oak. It has a very pure nose of raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, the whole cluster element imparting a subtle forest floor/bay leaf aroma. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin, good grip on the back palate, more black than red fruit and a slight tobacco note toward the structured finish. Promising, but it will need three or four years in bottle. 89-91

Touches of wood toast and earth frame the bright essence of red pinot fruit. The succulent, round and easy-going flavors are at once delicious and refreshing before concluding in a slightly toasty and sneaky long finish. This too should drink well on the earlier side if that's your preference. 87-90
