We have been admirers of Château Rouget (<rue - jhay>) at the Bottle Shop for many years. It is a classic example of the Pomerol region with a velvety, fruit forward style. Château Rouget has produced wines since the end of the Roman Empire, at which time their terroirs merged with St Emilion’s. At the end of the 19th century, a classification of Pomerol wines placed Rouget among the top five estates of the appellation. This recognition stems from the remarkable constancy showed by consecutive owners of the estate, who all worked hard to produce iconic wines. The Labruyère Family, who has owned Rouget since 1992, follows the same target. The estate is now considered by critics and amateurs as the winery which has made the most consistent progress across the appellation, vintage after vintage.
The soils at Rouget are gravelous, either mixed with clay or with sand. This soil composition, combined with an exceptional exposure, confers all the typicity, elegance and finesse to Château Rouget wines. Planted to 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the average age of the vines is 40 years. Vineyards are farmed sustainably, using practices such as cover crops and ploughing. Grapes are manually picked and carefully transported in small 20 kg crates. Harvest occurs in several steps, in order to secure an optimal maturity level. Bunches are sorted a first time as soon as they arrive in the cellar. Then, once the grapes are fully destemmed, they go through another double sorting table.

The 2017 Rouget is a total knockout. Aromatically explosive, deep and just so compelling in its beauty, the 2017 has so much to offer. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, bittersweet chocolate, spice and licorice build as this sumptuous, exotic beauty shows off all of its allure. The 2017 is not at all subtle, but it sure is gorgeous. Rouget was stellar en primeur. It is every bit as impressive from bottle.

Yum. Wonderful aromas of crushed berries, wet earth, sweet tobacco and fresh leather. Full body. Very tight, pinpointed palate with depth and length, too. The precision and balance is exceptional here.

This estate continues to produce outstanding wines in just about every vintage, and the 2017 Chateau Rouget is no exception. Deep purple/ruby-hued with lots of chocolatey dark fruits, toasted spice, graphite, and incense notes, this puppy hits the palate with medium to full body, a rounded, sexy texture, and no hard edges. It's already a joy to drink yet should keep for 10-15 years.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Rouget has a pronounced nose of stewed plums, sautéed herbs, baked black cherries and mulberries with wafts of fallen leaves and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers loads of savory-laced black fruit preserves, with a chewy texture and earthy finish.
