Founded in 1953 by Ambassador James D. Zellerbach with a vision to create wines that could compete on the world stage, Hanzell was named after his wife Hana 'Zell'. The estate sits at the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain range overlooking the south-western end of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. After extensive time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach returned inspired and educated by the region’s premier wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He then planted these two varieties at a time when there were less than a few hundred acres of each planted in North America. Today there are 6 different vineyards on the property, including some Pinot Noir from the original 1953 planting, deeming it one of the very oldest plantings in the region.

Since 1975, Hanzell has been owned and managed by the de Brye family, who is dedicated to the preservation of tradition with a progressive and sustainable approach to ensure the health of the land. In 2014, Jason Jardine took over as Hanzell’s President and Director of Winemaking. Jason has an impressive resume which started with an internship at Robert Mondavi Woodbridge Cellars at the ripe age of 21. He later moved on to manage the vineyards at Soter, took the reigns at Rhys Vineyards, helped Flowers convert to full biodynamics and then came to Hanzell to help the farm realize its dream of becoming fully sustainable and biologically independent. Alongside vines, one will find pigs and chickens roaming through the fields, a fully productive garden that feeds the Hanzell staff year round and not a trace of any chemical or pesticide in sight. All the wines are sourced from the estate and the estate is farmed following the “bio approach” which makes use of a natural nutrient cycle. The soils are primarily volcanic with a thin layer of red clay on top and the vine age is attributable to being planted on St. George rootstock, which is resistant to phylloxera.

This is an incredibly special Cabernet blend from this iconic estate. Certified Organic and practicing biodynamic, it is made of a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec & 2% Petit Verdot from Sonoma Valley AVA from Hanzell Estate: de Brye & Zellerbach blocks and Red Hills & Raynor-Montara clay-loam soils. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels (36% new). 13.3% abv.

Bold, rich and outrageously beautiful, Hanzell's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon will appeal most to readers who appreciate old-school California Cabernets. Dark plum, bay leaf, sage, menthol, grilled herbs and sweet pipe tobacco add striking dimensions of aromatic nuance. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2017 has it all. I can't wait to see how it ages.

We know it's early in the new year, but we anticipate that this Cabernet will be one of our favorites tasted in 2022. Immeasurably balanced, refined and pure, look for red and black fruits with nuances of violets and sweet oak spice complemented by fresh, energetic loamy earth tones. Made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this wine was informed early on by classic Bordeaux wine, but has become its own singular Sonoma Valley red made of Bordelais varieties. A real class act here.

With 12% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, this small production harks back to the historic days of Cabernet at the producer, and impresses in its firmness of structure and restrained elegance. Savory, earthy and herbal, it has classic elements of clove, cedar and cardamon, finishing bright and tension-filled in acidity. (Editors' Choice)
