Domaine de Chevalier is renowned for producing world class wines, due to its exceptional terroir and a draconian selection in the vineyard and in the cellar. In fact, this philosophy at times requires vineyard workers to carry out five waves of picking in order to pick only the ripest possible grapes. Furthermore, as of 1986, the planting of young vines led to the creation of a second wine, for both red and white, called Esprit de Chevalier. This includes vats that do not have quite the structure and focus of the grand vin as well as wine made from young vines. Vats that go into Esprit de Chevalier red must nevertheless be very complex, well-balanced, well-structured and, above all, elegant enough to be in keeping with Chevalier’s image.

At Domaine de Chevalier, the gravelly terroir’s tremendous winegrowing potential enables the estate to take maximum advantage of the most premium red grape variety in Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon. Planted to 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, this diversified approach gives the wines excellent balance and complexity. They farm with a deeply ecological approach.

This is an extremely polished and refined young wine with gorgeous blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, dark-chocolate and bark character. It’s full-bodied with ever so fine tannins and a long, long finish. Fantastic second wine of Domaine de Chevalier. Try after 2026.

The second wine of Domaine de Chevalier, this shows all the richness of the vintage, with weighty tannins and a generous future. Blackberry fruits and a core that promises plenty of potential as the dryness softens contribute to what will be a richly structured, complex wine. Drink from 2026.

The 2018 L'Esprit de Chevalier is a gorgeous second wine from Domaine de Chevalier. Soft, pliant and so expressive, the 2018 is simply impeccable. The purity of the flavors is striking. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and dried herbs add striking perfume to a core of supple red berry fruit. In a word: fabulous.

Packed with plum paste, cherry reduction, bramble and melted licorice notes that are enlivened by sanguine and iron hints through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2032. 8,333 cases made.

Checking in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot brought up mostly in used barrels, the 2018 Domaine De Chevalier L'Esprit De Chevalier has a rich, dense, medium to full-bodied style with slightly reserved darker currant and cherry fruits, notes of cedary herbs and earth, firm tannins, and a good finish. While most second wines are up-front and geared for early drinking, this is going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. It should keep for over a decade.
