Coming from Suisun Valley in California and made by the Wagner family of Caymus fame, this Grand Durif red is deep and majestic in style. Durif is another name for Petite Sirah, which was created circa 1880 by the French botanist François Durif, who crossed Peloursin Noir and Syrah. Today, the Durif, or Petite Sirah grape is widely planted in the Suisan Valley region. The Wagner's added "Grand" to the name of their Suisun-grown Durif because it has a grand style. The nose has notes of blueberries and earthy tones, while vanilla notes from oak aging come through on the finish. With lush textural tannins, this wine is rich, supple and totally enjoyable. A Caymus-style wine with a ton of flavor and charm at a nice price.
Only a 30-minute drive southeast of Napa, Suisun Valley (which became an AVA in 1982) is still largely undiscovered. With its warm days and cool nights, this pastoral region with multi-generational family farmers reminds the Wagner's of Napa Valley in the 1960s. Known for delicious stone fruits and walnuts, it is also gaining recognition for exceptional wine.
