When deciding on a vineyard, the primary criterion of Adelante was the preservation of an old vineyard. By the mid-nineties, the planted vines in La Consulta decreased from 18,000 to 6,000. Two-thirds of the old vines had been removed for other crops or left fallow. The owners of Adelante believe old vines in the right place have a unique character. Their 68-year-old vineyard Don Eugenio, is located in La Consulta, Mendoza, Argentina.

It is generally accepted that the Uco Valley is the premier grape growing area in Argentina today. La Consulta is a small wine-growing sub-region in the southern Uco Valley of Mendoza. La Consulta has exceptional qualities, particularly because the Tunuyan River carries fresh water directly from the Andes. Due to the proximity of the Tunuyan River the terrain in the area is largely alluvial. This clay rich soil topped with a sandy surface provides good drainage, allowing the vines to grow deep, strong roots.

This wine is made of 74-year-old, self-rooted vines in alluvial sand and clay soils at a high elevation of 3,000 feet. Very low yields of 2.5 tons per acre/42 hectoliters per hectare give this Malbec exceptional concentration and elegance. Winemaker Ray Kaufman employed a cold soak of three days, used native yeast fermentation, followed by natural malolactic fermentation; no SO2 was added until the malolactic fermentation was complete, and at that point, very little. After ML fermentation, the wine was pressed and put into 20% new and 80% old French oak.

Intense and bold, yet fresh and lively, this Malbec has pure blue fruit flavors accented by minerality, earth and spice. The wine has ample acid, structure, and body to give length to the finish that will develop in the glass and over time in the bottle.

Adelante's 'Don Eugenio' vineyard was planted in 1946 by an Italian immigrant, Eugenio Gioachini. He built the house on the property where he and his wife raised four daughters and a son. He tended the vineyard until his death at 90 years, by which time he and his vineyard had long since come to be called Don Eugenio by the neighbors. There is no record of a specific wine being made with grapes from this vineyard; rather, the grapes were delivered to a local co-op winery for vinification.

One day the future owners of Adelante were enjoying lunch in La Consulta with Hugo Cabrini. He told us about an old vineyard nearby that he heard was for sale. Soon after, they found Don Eugenio, an old-vine Malbec vineyard in need of care and renovation. The vines were planted in the traditional French Guyot layout without wires. The vines were were seriously over cropped and overgrown with leaves. Seeing an opportunity to rescue an ignored old vine vineyard and for the first time in its history, taste wine made from this piece of land, they purchased Don Eugenio in 2003.

A juicy, ripe nose leads to plump blue fruits on the palate with a nice, fleshy mouthfeel. Some stony terroir notes add complexity. This feels balanced and elegant. The old vines are evident.
