Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of Burgundy's most sought after estates, and perfectly exemplifies the identity of Volnay. D'Angerville's list of holdings touches all of the village’s great terroirs, including one of the most picturesque vineyards in Volnay, the monopole of the estate, Clos des Ducs. The domaine started bottling its own production in the 1920s after the current Marquis’ grandfather, Sem d’Angerville, challenged the blending methods of the negociants’ and then began bottling his own wines instead of selling them his grapes. D'Angerville was one of the first Burgundy domains to do this, making history and encouraging the future of the region at the same time. Today the estate is led by Guillaume d’Angerville, farmed immaculately, and is producing some of the best wines in the entire Cote d’Or.
D'Angerville Meursault Santenots expresses above all the minerality of this exceptional terroir. The estate's method of breeding, without excessive batonnage, gives it extra energy and tension. This white wine is dry, very fruity, with a persistent bouquet reminiscent of hazelnut. Its fat is not expressed in attack, but on the length. It can be tasted young or kept for several years.

Firm reduction presently dominates the nose though I suspect that it won't last. There is again fine richness to the appealing textured and vibrant flavors that also conclude in a clean, refreshingly dry and very lemony finale. This is sufficiently forward that it could be enjoyed on the younger side, yet it should also be capable of rewarding several years of cellaring as well. 89-91

Aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus zest and fresh peach, framed by a light touch of youthful reduction, introduce d'Angerville's 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Santenots, a medium to full-bodied, tightly wound wine that was quite reserved when I tasted it. I suspect that, in bottle, it will show all the plenitude that one expects from this site in a warm vintage, but it's also promisingly bright and precise. 89-91

This has a very expressive floral character on the nose. D’Angerville notes that it was the second year in a row to see the impact of global warming; with soft and friendly fruit, this is a wine for early drinking, very pleasant now, if it lacks the substance for long-term ageing. Blended from grapes harvested throughout the village, destemmed and punched down during fermentation.
