Château de Villeneuve is one of the benchmark producers in the Saumur-Champigny appellation of the Loire Valley, France. 80% of production is dedicated to Cabernet Franc, which is the local red, and 20% to Chenin Blanc, the local white. These grapes are well-known in Chinon and Vouvray, respectively. On the plateau overlooking the Loire River, the Château de Villeneuve offers stunning views. The estate is also home to a magnificent eighteenth century mansion, built in stone from the region's terroir : the tufa.
Certified organic since 2011, the 25 acres surrounding the property of the Chevalier family give complex wines marked by a great personality. The work of the vineyard is done organically : grass growing between the rows with Kentucky bluegrass to maximize rooting and water supply to the vine, preservation of natural enemies (typhlodrome, thrips …) to promote integrated pest management and to limit the use of pesticides. Tillage as cantaloupe, pruning and removal of cons-buds to limit yields, green harvesting to accentuate lower yields.
Another benefit to this wine : if you prefer low sulfite wines, this is perfect for you. Jean-Pierre Chevalier, who has run operations here since 1984, is allergic to sulfites, and as a result the estate's wines are bottled with very little SO2.
The 'Bienboire' (loosely translated to 'good drink') is a small enclosure of 1.5 hectares, which was named by the local land registry because it was said historically that horses came to drink there. Made from Cabernet Franc vines averaging 35 years, this light and delicious red is served in France mostly in the spring and summer for outdoor grilling dinners, sunny luncheons, or simply with cheeses and charcuterie.
Tasted and loved by our staff, Bienboire is pretty and smooth with black plum, ripe red bell pepper, blue flower and licorice notes. This is a charming palate dancer for those of us who enjoy clean, airy, aromatic, low sulfite reds.

The 2020 Saumur-Champigny from this organic producer offers an easy softness and ripe expression with raspberry fruit and a hint of pencil lead. It has plenty of charm in youth and will suit early drinking for its ripe, gently tannic embrace.
