'Vendanges Tardives' is a famous wine style in Alsace, meaning 'late harvest' in French. The phrase refers to a style of dessert wine where the grapes are allowed to hang on the vine until they start to dehydrate. This process, called passerillage, concentrates the sugars in the juice and heightens and deepens the flavors within the wine. VT's are also known to age for many years, even up to 50 years in great vintages. Aged for 12 months in oak, the 2009 Pinot Gris Grand Cru Brand has a wonderful balance between richness and freshness, showing itself to be both sweet and savory. In Alsace they serve this type of noble wine with duck foie gras, fresh, pan-fried or in a mousse, or with creamy fish dishes, especially trout almondine. Brand is an Alsace Grand Cru vineyard overlooking the historic village of Turckheim, in the Haut-Rhin department. It is one of 51 Grand Cru vineyards dotted along the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains.

The Pinot Gris vines of Brand are planted in granite soils and the average age of the vines is very old at 40 years. The Baur Family winery was established in Turckheim in 1741. The Domaine consists of exceptionally situated vineyards. With an average annual production of just 9000 cases, Pierre and Thomas Baur carry on the traditions of the past generations while keeping an eye forward to the future. Their deep knowledge of the Terroir and strict work in the Vineyards enables them to enhance the complexity of the wines they produce. They view themselves as working a natural treasure with the promise of preserving and improving it for their descendants.

Pierre and Thomas have chosen to pursue another level of quality by converting the whole Domaine to Biodynamic farming and it has been Certified Organic since 1998 by Ecocert, certified Biodynamic in 2001 by Biodyvin. Father Pierre Baur: “I feel like adhering to Biodynamic principals adds another layer of complexity, purity and assures wines that are balanced”. And his son Thomas states: "The great quality of our wines is directly correlated to the attention we pay in the Vineyards”.
