There is no greater pleasure for the wine lover than to drive along the 'Route des Grands Crus', this narrow road that winds through some of the most prestigious vineyards of the Côte d'Or, including this one : Musigny. Coming from Beaune and going north, before reaching the village of Chambolle still hidden from view, we pass Grands-Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot. The path starts to climb a little. We have arrived at a small terrace overlooking Vougeot, bathed in sunshine, with a splendid view over the plain in the distance. The soil feels light. It is chalky and strewn with small pebbles: this is Musigny. One of the first true pioneers of vine growing in the world was Mucius who owned this vineyard on a hillside in Gallo-Roman times. In the early Middle Ages, with the help of the monks, Musigny rose to fame, and has occupied an elite reputation ever since.

The Domaine of Joseph Drouhin owns an enviable parcel in this exceptional Grand Cru. Under Robert Drouhin's exacting viticultural practices, the Pinot Noir grape is severely pruned and its yield kept down to a strict minimum. Musigny is and will always be a rare wine. The Drouhin estate owns 0,67 ha. (1.675 acre) with vines averaging 33 years.

Drouhin's 2019 Musigny Grand Cru is brilliant, soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, orange rind, exotic spices, rose petals, musk and classy new oak. Full-bodied, layered and perfumed, it's deep and multidimensional, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. This is worth a special effort to seek out. 95-97

A super-elegant and super-silky Musigny that glides over the palate, in spite of its serious tannin structure. Excellent concentration of fine red-berry flavors. Lively acidity that gives this great delicacy at the very long finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.
