Brand Poderi Colla

The Colla family has been a winemaking family in the Langhe since the beginning of the 18th century but despite their long history, Poderi Colla is one of the newest estates in the region. It was started in 1994 by Tino Colla and his niece, Frederica (the daughter of the legendary winemaker Beppe Colla of Prunotto fame). Beppe Colla bought Prunotto in 1956 and made his first single vineyard wines in 1961. He was one of the first winemakers to focus on bottling single vineyard wines across his entire range. Beppe's calling card became his Barolo Bussia and it remained his favorite vineyard until he sold Prunotto in 1990.

What is now Poderi Colla is the product of thirty years of experience from owning Prunotto and vinifying nearly all the great vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco. Beppe, Frederica, and Tino used their intimate understanding of vineyards throughout the region to buy three specific estates. Those three estates now comprise Poderi Colla.

RONCAGLIE BARBARESCO is located in the cru of Roncaglie, historically been regarded as one of the best crus in Barbaresco. The name Roncaglia comes from the Latin word "Roncaleis" meaning "steep road. The vinficiation style behind the Barolo and the Barbaresco is consistent with occasionally the time in bottle before release varying. The wine macerates on its skins for two to three weeks depending on the vintage. The wine ages for one year in large oak casks and for one to two years in bottle before release.

"Roncaglie is located in Treiso from which Poderi Colla sources from their six-hectare parcel, spanning the entire range of the cru’s elevation from 200 to 250 meters in elevation. The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie is lifted with aromas of fresh wild strawberry, rose petals, fresh herbs, and dusty earth. The palate is medium-bodied and pretty, with dried red raspberry, dried apricot, and tea leaf. There are building, angular tannins and refreshing, vibrant acidity. This is a lovely wine with lots of energy and finesse. Drink 2024-2042."

The Colla family's 2018 Barbaresco Roncalie packs quite a punch in its deceptively medium-bodied frame. A burst of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, herbs and dried cherry fruit makes a great first impression. The 2018 is going to need a few years to soften. It is unusually firm today, and yet full of promise for the future. All this needs is a bit of patience.
