It doesn't get more old school, old world Italian than this bottle...  Cantina Privata Boscaini by Masi is a unique collection of five wines, precious cru selections and great vintages of Amarone, produced in limited quantities and only when Nature is at her most magnificent. Cantina Privata Boscaini presents an extraordinary family history and territorial inheritance, a tangible expression of the values cultivated in time, a collection of “liquid treasures”, to be conserved with the maximum care and shared with best friends and wine lovers.

'Real luxury is an authentic product made from raw materials selected with care and encapsulating the experience and the know-how that comes from a long tradition. Their quality lies in their essence and has no need of exhibition. This is the spirit of the Cantina Privata Boscaini.' Raffaele Boscaini, seventh generation.

The Boscaini family has always had the tradition of keeping back bottles of Amarone from the best vintages in their own private cellars. The practice began as a family habit in the 19th century when Paolo Boscaini liked to keep back wine from vintages which had a particular family significance, such as weddings and the births of children and grandchildren. It was Guido who really established the tradition in the next century, beginning in the 1920s, as he had a habit of keeping reserve quantities of the best vintages, also so as to compare vintages as they evolved with age. The tradition continues today, and is the source of the most important and the finest collection of old Amarone wines: a tradition that the Boscaini family keeps alive with love and dedication.

This wine has an incredibly deep ruby red color. Intense and complex aromas of baked fruit and spices on the nose with hints of spices such as cloves and cinnamon with coffee beans. Remarkable on the palate for its imposing structure and soft, silky tannins. Warming alcohol is well balanced with pleasing acidity. Long finish dominated by marasca cherries. Good with red meats and other full flavored foods. Excellent with strong cheeses such as parmesan and pecorino.

Chosen as a Top Amarone Estate by Forbes.com : 'Masi - Arguably the most famous producer of Amarone, Masi, under the leadership of Sandro Boscaini, has been responsible for several firsts for this wine, including the first two examples of single vineyard Amarone: Campolongo di Torbe and Mazzano; these wines have a superb track record of aging potential, sometimes as long as 25-30 years. This producer’s Costasera is an elegant introduction to Amarone; Masi has as enviable a track record as any Amarone producer.'

Of these two top-shelf wines from Masi, I like the 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Mazzano even better than the Capolongo di Torbe in 2011. The Mazzano shows more focus and more sharpness, and it opens nicely. It is surely one of the great Amarones on the market today, and this warm vintage especially brings forth the darkness, thickness and concentration you're looking for in this tradition. This powerful and indestructible wine with 16% alcohol is a blend of 75% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara. The wine is beautiful, opulent and deep, but it's hard to imagine a food pairing possibility that isn't wood-fired meat marinated in spicy mesquite sauce. Those exotic flavors are similar to what you find in this wine. It ages in 600-liter oak barrels for three years, with a combination of new and used wood. The Mazzano Vineyard is located in the village of Negrar and shows loose marl soils planted in terraces supported by dry stone walls. The grapes thrive at 350 to 415 meters above sea level. Some 15,200 bottles were made.

Enticing on the nose, with notes of ripe fruit and woodsy spice, this elegant, full-bodied Amarone shows lovely integration, marrying dense, fine-grained tannins and a tar-tinged, minerally underpinning with a range of mulled black cherry, dried thyme, loamy earth, prune and bergamot flavors that expand on the palate and finish. A beauty. Drink now through 2031. 1,266 cases made.

Underbrush, tobacco leaf, toasted oak and leather aromas lead the way. It's tight and concentrated, offering cassis, kirsch, prune, clove and licorice alongside firm, close-grained tannins that grip the close. It closes on a hazelnut note. Drink 2023-2031.
