Dom Pérignon is produced exclusively as a Vintage Champagne. If the vintage is not exceptional, and up to the standards of the Dom Pérignon legacy, then the wine will not be produced. Each vintage is a creation, singular and unique, that expresses both the character of the year, and the character of Dom Pérignon. After at least eight years of elaboration in the cellars, the wine embodies the perfect balance of richness and harmony. For Dom Pérignon, assemblage is paramount in the champagne elaboration process. Starting with the vine itself, this is the creative gesture that draws on contrasts and paradoxes, contradictions and synergies through intuitive and inventive research to reveal the true nature of each vintage. A year full of paradoxes for winemaking, 2012 ultimately gave birth to a great vintage.

Combining intensity and crispness, the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2012 blend reveals a fine structure, enhanced by balanced acidity and ripeness of fruit. The nose is full and complex, mingling flowers with fruit, and herbs with minerals. The bouquet is tactile, subtly enticing us along a trail of white flowers and apricot nectar, followed by the freshness of yellow plum and mint, minerality and white pepper. Energy dominates on the palate. After a welcoming opening, the wine quickly becomes vibrant and then literally explodes with a surge of effervescence and tonicity. Focused and delicious, the finish brings a penetrating crispness marked by ginger, croissant and toast accents.

The 2012 Dom Pérignon has turned out very well indeed, unwinding in the glass with notes of Anjou pear, smoke, toasted nuts, freshly baked bread and crisp stone fruit. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's still tightly wound, its incipiently fleshy core of fruit framed by racy acids and chalky grip, complemented by a classy pinpoint mousse. A touch drier and a touch less reductive than the 2008 out of the gates, these two vintages are clearly destined to be compared for some time to come; but at this early stage, my instinct is that the 2012 will have the edge in the long term.

This eloquent Champagne has an enticing waft of Mandarin orange on the nose that continues on the palate, which is layered with flavors of crushed blackberry and cassis, toast, chopped almond, graphite and oyster shell. A bright, finely-knit and harmonious version, with a lovely, raw silk-like mousse, and a lasting, expressive finish. Drink now through 2037.
