The Pajè vineyard is 1.8 ha (4.5 acres) in size with a South West exposure at an elevation of 220 - 260 meters (720 – 850 feet). Owned by the Basso and Giordano families, this vineyard is a small bowl facing South/West and lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. Pajè is slightly lower in altitude and the vineyard is more open to the Tanaro River influence resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with high calcium level. In result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins and it is never shy in acidity. The latter makes Pajè somehow sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages. Pajè is particularly attractive after some aging, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate. First vintage produced was 1967 as a small commemorative label for the "Cavalieri del Tartufo" association. Regular production started from the 1982 vintage.
Look for intense mineral and spicy aromas, balanced ripe tannins and elegant finish. Pajè produces complex wines with bright, intense and lively fruit with balanced tannic finish. Food matches include fresh egg-pasta dishes, risotto, white and red meat, game and venison.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Paje is a classic wine from this site. Deeply spiced and balsamic notes meld into a core of dark, sepia-toned Nebbiolo fruit. A Barbaresco of real presence and substance, the Paje makes itself felt. It's one of my early dark horse favorites in this range from Produttori del Barbaresco.

This is all about power and structure, with cherry, blackberry, earth, wild herb and tar flavors buoyed by a dense matrix of tannins. The fruit is there, peeking through the maze briefly before the tannins take hold on the finish; never obtrusive, they drive the lingering finish. Best from 2029 through 2045. 1,111 cases made, 223 cases imported.

The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins. In fact, this was the second of nine wines served in a flight that started with the lightest Riservas and ended with the most powerful wines.
