This winery is owned by a very long line of wine growers, winemakers and black-smiths named Boisson since the 1700's. In the old times, the Boisson, had two jobs at once: they were both wine-makers and black-smiths. The name of the estate comes from this second profession, because the nails used to fix the shoe under the horse’s foot are called, in the regional language, “caboche”. It was, at the time, the nickname used to call the Boisson family. That is how the first bottles of the Domaine du Père Caboche appeared in Châteauneuf du Pape. Since then, the family has had parcels that have remained in the family, without there being any exchange or sale. The vines which are still there now are over 100 years old and produce an outstanding wine. The oldest parcel was planted in 1906. Today they are vine-growers from father to son and daughter.
The color is deep ruby red with dark purple highlights. The classy nose of the wine is typical from the best terroirs of Grenache on rolled-pebbles where our old vines are planted. This complex wine reveals soot notes, bright and ripe black fruit fragrances and a significant minerality. Powerful and voluptuous on the palate, this wine has a nice balance between velvety tannins and sweetness softened by a subtle freshness. It offers mineral notes and bright fruit flavors with a very long and aromatic finish. This full-bodied wine is age-worthy but it can also be enjoyed now.

Marked by scents of smoked meat and ripe, plummy fruit, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Elisabeth Chambellan Vieilles Vignes is full-bodied and expansive on the palate, lush, velvety and fun to drink, although not possessed of tremendous length. The tannins slowly build on the finish, but I would opt to drink this on the young side, as I see it only becoming drier and more savory over time.
