Domaine Faiveley owns a single 4+ acre parcel of the total 25 acre Les Cazetiers vineyard. The vineyard is located high on the hillside in the northern part of the appellation bordering the equally famous 1er Cru of Clos St-Jacques. Exposure is due east with soils made up primarily of white marl (clay) and limestone gravel. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a short maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 70% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Erwan Faiveley explained to Burgundy the future goals at this important domaine: "while we like the current style and what it offers (more modern), for several years we were feeling that perhaps we had strayed too far from our roots (more traditional). To this end, we finally asked ourselves if there might not be a way to combine the two in a way that remained true to our history but didn't require 20 years before the wines were completely ready to drink. So now we're looking for more density and riper tannins while doing our best to retain a more refined mouthfeel. To achieve this we're harvesting a few days later in the search for a higher level of phenolic maturity and then vinifying the fruit in a fashion that reduces forced extraction and emphasizes natural extraction. In other words, we will take what the fruit has to give in any given vintage without forcing more out of it that often results in overtly extracted wines."

Deep ruby red hue with an intense and complex nose characterised by red fruits, toast and subtle roasted notes. The palate is rich and round with a firm structure and direct tannins. This remarkably powerful wine offers a silky mouthfeel and exceptional length. Serve with Duck breast with blackcurrant, rabbit stew, roasted Salmon, Lamb chops.

Mingling aromas of sweet wild berries with rich bass notes of forest floor, spice and grilled squab, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is medium to full-bodied, broad and concentrated, with rich structuring tannins, comparatively low acidity and a long, sapid finish.

Charming and classy, this red is lush and saturated with black cherry, blackberry, earth and a hint of tobacco flavors. It's balanced, turning firmer midpalate, with powdery tannins lining the tangy finish. An accent of iron creeps in at the end. Best from 2024 through 2042.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers comes from Faiveley's substantial four-hectare parcel. I find this has more gumption and detail than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques at the moment. The nose features layers of blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, and the sweet, candied palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. Blood orange and quince infuse the red fruit toward the finish. Excellent. 91-93
