MAGNUM SIZE Deep ruby in color with intense dark fruit aromas of ripe black cherry, black currant and plum interlaced with complex notes of sweet herbs, clove, vanilla, dark chocolate, and toasty oak. Blackberry, cocoa, and black peppercorn unite on the layered palate with complex notes dark berry and cassis with highlights of bay, anise and mocha. Full yet elegant on the palate, with vibrant fruit and very approachable tannins with hints of nutmeg and vanilla bean add to the long persistent finish.

Mount Veeder Winery, located on the rugged Mount Veeder mountain, originally made a name for themselves in the 1970's with their first release in 1973. Mount Veeder was the first vineyard in Napa Valley planted to all five of the Bordeaux grape varieties used in a classic Bordeaux blend. They feel that blending is the key to crafting the most complete, balanced wine and enhancing the inherent characteristics of each variety. The philosophy at Mount Veeder Winery is that each wine should have its own remarkable way of expressing the mountain soil from which it was born. They believe that great wines are a reflection of their terroir—the combination of soil, topography, microclimate and people—and that excellent grapes handled with minimal processing have the potential to produce the greatest wines. The ultimate goal is the creation of a rich, seamless wine.

These Mount Veeder vines speak a language all their own. Becoming fluent in that language, fully understanding all its subtleties and nuance is the trick to making great wine from mountain vineyards. Over the years, the folks at Mt. Veeder winery have come to know the contours, dips, and ridges of the mountain and the sequence of ripening that is the key to it all. A Mount Veeder harvest is a Zen-like art of moving across a three-dimensional chessboard. Take the uphill side of the vine only, or the downhill side, or just the north, south, east, or west section. They pick only what is ready and at peak flavor and ripeness. It’s a complex endeavor, and needs to be carved with precision, matching areas of the block that are at the same level of ripeness, and leaving other areas to mature another week or more.

Plenty of blueberry and chocolate aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with round, fresh tannins. Lot of blue fruit and walnuts. Then crushed stones with the fruit at the finish. Flavorful, yet not overdone. Give this four or five years to come around. Try after 2025.

A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color. The nose absolutely sings of warm blackcurrants, black cherries and mulberries plus fragrant suggestions of chocolate box, lilacs and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with energetic, crunchy black fruit flavors, framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. What a bargain price for this classic Napa Cab beauty!

Mount Veeder offers a higher level of consistency and relative value across an impressive array of price points than other Napa mountain appellations. At the lower end of this spectrum, Mount Veeder winery has made a complete and multifaceted example of this unique Napa subregion. Blue fruited, herbal and rustic on the nose with a direct, to-the-point texture, finishing with a typical, Mount Veeder brambly-edge. 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec. Another outstanding wine from this estate, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of spiced plums, blackcurrants, new leather, incense, and tobacco. It's nicely textured, has a balanced, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and, I suspect, the class to evolve nicely for 10-12 years.
