Rudd Samantha's Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Named for the founders' daughter Samantha, this Cabernet is a selection of Rudd Oakville Estate blocks that yield grapes of great depth and character. In fact, Rudd Estate stands out as an exceptional place with exceptional terroir – uniquely situated within Napa Valley with a geologic backbone of volcanic rock weathered into core stone bedrock and alluvial sediments creating iron-rich, well-drained soil ideal for growing grapes. Rudd's vineyards are farmed organically by their own full-time team. Having their own team enables some of the most significant winemaking actions of the year to be made in a focused, adaptive, and timely manner. Most importantly, this control over the vineyards allows them to learn from the cycles of each season and alter techniques to bring out the unique potential of the Estate’s land.
Founder Leslie Rudd’s journey in wine began long before he created his own great wine estate. In his youth, he joined his father’s alcoholic beverage wholesale distribution business in Wichita, Kansas. Due to Leslie's leadership, Standard Beverage Corporation grew to be the state’s largest alcoholic beverage wholesaler and represents most of the world’s premium wine, beer and spirits brands. Intent on furthering his experience, Leslie expanded into the specialty foods space successfully launching and investing in several national restaurants as well as adding the iconic Dean & DeLuca to his portfolio, which he owned until 2014. In 2005, Leslie desired to cast a new vision on the steakhouse concept and take inspiration from the famed L’Ami Louis of Paris in creating PRESS Restaurant, a modern steakhouse located in St. Helena, California. PRESS Restaurant features the largest list of Napa Valley wines in the world with vintages back to the 1950s. Leslie’s passion for bridging the gap between the past and present is further evident in the 2012 renovation of Oakville Grocery, which he purchased in 2007, to make sure that it would remain open as one of the oldest groceries in the country. Each of these ventures share a commitment to excellence and appreciation of artisan products by blending the traditions of the past while instilling a modern twist. Before his passing in 2018, Leslie handed over the reins to his daughter Samantha.

Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's is made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 21 months in 86% new French oak. This is a vineyard selection blend usually harvested slightly later. Very deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant cassis, blackberry pie and preserved plums scents with nuances of mocha, pencil shavings, menthol, lilacs and cloves plus a touch of chargrilled meat. The medium to full-bodied palate is super intense with layer upon layer of black fruits, savory and floral notions and a rock-solid foundation of grainy tannins, finishing very long and very minerally. 698 cases produced.
VinousThe 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's is magnificent. Powerful and sumptuous, with stunning inner perfume and sweetness, the 2016 is simply thrilling to taste. Bittersweet chocolate, plum, black cherry, lavender, spice and new leather take on added shades of richness and texture in this towering, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. Swaths of tannin build as this striking wine gains volume and intensity with air. In a word: superb!
