THIS IS A 1/2 BOTTLE  The first vines found at Mont-Redon date back to Roman times. They were planted at the bottom of the hill, sheltered from the Mistral wind, that gave its name to the Mont-Redon property. In 1344, “Mourredon”, part of the Pope’s land holdings, was officially recognized as a vineyard. In 1923, Henri Plantin took over Château Mont-Redon and its 2.5 hectares of vines spread out across the appellation. He worked on grouping together as many parcels as possible, and had the foresight to plant on the wide open plateau, with its rocky soil and forest patches, never before cultivated, that looks over the Château. Alive with the same passion for their work, always in quest of the highest quality terroirs and the grape varieties that are best adapted to them, Henri Plantin’s descendants continue to search out the best pieces of land with which to ensure the domaine’s growth. For four generations, in the middle of their vines and through the centuries, the family has continually enhanced its wine-making knowledge, always in pursuit of greater quality. All of the grapes at Mont-Redon are handpicked to enhance this point.

This has an intense nose with red fruit aromas combined with complex smokiness. Tight and focused tannins on the palate. Enjoyable now but requires a few years of bottle maturation to fully integrate aging notes. Very elegant and refined finish.

The base wine, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape has a healthy ruby/purple color to go with its classic Southern Rhône notes of ripe red and black fruits, lots of earthy garrigue, some ground pepper, and a touch of minerality. All this carries over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a great mid-palate and sweet tannins. It certainly shows the upfront, charming style of the vintage, but I love its mid-palate, it’s beautifully balanced, and is just a seriously classy wine from this estate, which deserves more recognition today. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 15 years or more.

Deep, shimmering ruby. Powerful red and dark berry scents are complemented by exotic spice, garrigue and floral nuances. Sappy and densely packed, offering juicy raspberry, cherry preserve, licorice and fruitcake flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Gently chewy tannins build steadily on an impressively long, penetrating finish that leaves behind lavender and juicy cherry notes.

Dark and winey, with waves of ganache, steeped plum, blackberry reduction and melted black licorice rolling through. The finish is scored with warm earth and smoldering tobacco notes, showing ample grip for the cellar. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarèse and Cinsault. Best from 2023 through 2036.
