Corton-Charlemagne is the only vineyard in Burgundy bearing the name of two emperors: 'Corton' comes from the Gallo-Roman Curtis d'Othon, meaning the Domaine of Othon, a German emperor. And 'Charlemagne', the famous emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, was once the proprietor of the vineyard. Corton-Charlemagne is magnificently situated on an impressive hill dominating the village of Aloxe-Corton. As the slope turns from east to west, most of the vineyards face due south. Joseph Drouhin gives the utmost care to the vines they own within it, and ensure low yields, no fertilizer and no weed killer for a pure and natural development. Plowing and leaf removal are used when necessary. The wine-making techniques are traditional; barrel fermentation, aging in oak barrels.
'One of the greatest wines of Burgundy, to be tasted with awe and reverence. It has an intense golden hue. On the nose, there are some subtle tones of rose, fresh almond, citrus, honey, exotic wood and spice. Majestic and well balanced on the palate. Generous and lively at the same time. Intense and complex aftertaste. All the aromas mingle and linger for quite a long time afterwards. A wine of undeniable majesty.' - Véronique Drouhin-Boss
Excellent with shellfish cooked in a light wine sauce or any delicate fish prepared grilled or poached.

A rich, supple white, with great balance and expression, delivering peach, lemon, mineral and spice flavors allied to a bone-dry, chalky structure that reflects greater austerity on the finish for now. Shows superb harmony and length. Best from 2025 through 2036. 100 cases imported.

A ripe and generous Corton-Charlemagne with a caramelized-pear aroma, but the stony character that’s typical for the site is the dominant aspect of the wine. Serious structure here! Drink or hold.

From holdings located in the south-facing climat Les Languettes, Drouhin produced three barrels of the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine), a medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated wine that's bright and structured, evocative of white flowers, pomelo, orange oil and buttery pastry. Barrel Sample: 93-95

Prominent aromas of mineral reduction and floral elements are laced with hints of wood toast, citrus peel, apple and anise. The sleekly muscular and stony big-bodied flavors are also nicely refined yet powerful while possessing excellent delineation on the youthfully austere finale. This is clearly ripe yet manages to retain the style of a classic 92-94

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a little conservative on the nose and takes some time to open. Yellow fruit, just a touch of candle wax and just a hint of lime. The palate is rounded on the entry, good weight, honeyed in texture with fine acidity. Just a hint of white pepper perks up the finish here.
