"David Ramey has been a trailblazing California Chardonnay winemaker for nearly four decades, and he tapped one of the top sites of southern Napa to make this classic-rated 2016. Carneros features gently rolling hills and benefits from the cooling influence of marine air from the Pacific; in the vineyard, heavy clay soils limit vine vigor and yields to produce concentrated flavors. This is a well-structured Chardonnay made with classic techniques such as whole-cluster pressing, barrel fermentation and malolactic conversion. It should blossom in the cellar, reflecting Ramey’s winemaking philosophy: less new oak in favor of accentuating vibrant fruit and minerality." WINE SPECTATOR
Vine selection for Ramey's Hyde Vineyard Chardonnays are predominantly old Wente with some Robert Young (which is itself a Wente selection). The Wente produces a classic, Burgundian-style wine without the tropical fruit tones of some California Chardonnays. Hyde Vineyard wines often seem charming and feminine, with high natural acidity playing a prominent role.

This full-bodied, incredibly rich and mouth-filling wine from a near-legendary vineyard saturates the palate with poached pears, marzipan, vanilla bean and crème brulee flavors, while being subtly lifted by a slice of tangy citrus that keeps it well balanced. Best from 2026-2036.

The 2019 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is age-worthy and expressive—the aromatic intensity is turned up and flavors are notably pure and in focus. It unfolds scents of lemon oil, Greek yogurt, petrichor, flint and underlying wafts of cheese rind as it spends time in the glass. The palate is youthfully taut, displaying the saline and tanginess characteristic of youthful Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay—this will require plenty of time to unwind in bottle. Its concentrated citrus and stony character creates a shimmery impression that energizes the long finish and adds a touch of magic to this wine. 960 cases were made.

Stunning, with a mouthwatering mix of Honeycrisp apple, Meyer lemon, tangerine and pear flavors that come across as powerful, sleek and exact. Reveals toasted green tea, fresh grated ginger and loads of citrus zest grace notes on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2030. 535 cases made.

The 2020 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is thin, watery and diluted. There are very few Hyde signatures to be found in the 2020 although the Ramey team did an admirable job in softening the edges to give this wine a good bit of appeal for the next 2-3 years.
