Avignonesi Grifi 2012
Named after the original founders of the estate, the Avignonesi family, this winery has undergone an exciting journey over the last 10 years. Acquired by a wine passionate Belgian named Virginie Saverys, Avignonesi has become a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture in Italy. Virginie has surrounded herself with highly experienced Italians for winemaking and vineyard management, as well as young up-and-comers like her assistant enologist from Australia, and her wine bar- owning daughter in the mix. The wines at Avignonesi are better than ever, and a terrific value. Made of 53% Sangiovese and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine SpectatorOffers a core of pure cherry and blackberry, accented by tar, underbrush and leather flavors. Winds down, revealing a layer of strict tannins on the long finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Grifi is a tasty blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal measure. The wine delivers a slightly evolved profile with robust and luscious fruit at its core. This is especially true in terms of the bouquet where the wine reveals earthy intensity backed by savory and leathery overtones. However, the wine is pleasingly elegant and finessed overall. When you dig a little deeper, you can taste some of the heat and the jammy fruit of the vintage. There is a distant point of sweetness on the finish.
