Tenuta Le Calcinaie Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva 2015
This is a luxurious, deeply flavored example of Tuscany's great white wine : Vernaccia di San Gimignano. 'Vigna ai Sassi' Riserva is winemaker Simone Santini's award-winning Vernaccia made from his oldest vines planted in pliocene soil and clay soils filled with fossils, shells and ancient remnants of the Ligurian sea. The minerality in Simone's organic soils gives this wine great character. Aged in stainless steel, two years on the lees for extra richness and roundness, made of 90% Vernaccia and 10% Chardonnay.
We visited Simone Santini at his vineyard, Tenuta Le Calcinaie, near San Gimignano and tasted his full range of organic, classic Tuscan wines. Across the board, both the whites and reds were ripe, pure, energetic and utterly charming, just as the winemaker is! Le Calcinaie has 12 hectares covered with vines with perfect exposure, beautifully tended. Serve with goat and sheep's milk cheeses, shellfish and lemony chicken dishes and more...
“Tenuta le Calcinaie is a breakout winery in this report. Their Vernaccia-based wines all performed beautifully. I look forward to tasting more from this small estate in the future.” –Wine Advocate

Wine AdvocateThis is a beautiful and sophisticated Vernaccia. The 2015 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Vigna Ai Sassi has tons of saffron and mineral notes surrounded by peach, lemon mousse and honeydew melon. The wine offers good fullness and even some white licorice at the back. Great job.
Wine SpectatorRich, showing depth to the apple, almond, honey and salty, minerally flavors. Clean and bright, with a lingering chalky aftertaste. Drink now. 500 cases made, only 50 cases imported.
