La Follette Los Primeros Pinot Noir 2016
When we tasted the most recent releases of Pinot Noir from La Follette, we exclaimed, 'These are what good California Pinots used to taste like!' Balanced, pure, bright cherry red in color and sunny in flavor, good California Pinots are made of 100% Pinot Noir (zero Syrah added which has contributed to the change in style on the West Coast) and try to be pretty and elegant, versus big and jammy. La Follette crafts Pinots and Chardonnay that express specific vineyard sites and appellations, in the tradition of great European estates. With its portfolio of small lots, La Follette stands out among its peers. Owners Pete and Terri Kight have had a life-long personal interest in wine, and the nature of grape growing, leading them on a perpetual quest for wines with a sense of place. Under the leadership of Pete and Terri, La Follette produces distinguished vineyard-designated and appellation Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that take their voice from the sites in which they are grown. Pete places trust in his experienced team, and allows them to follow their instincts, which we believe has led to the greatest set of new releases ever produced at the estate.
Winemaker Simone Sequeira worked under La Follette's previous winemaker, and has put her own elegant stamp on the style of these wines. Prior to joining La Follette, Simone ran lab operations at another winery in the Russian River Valley. Simone spent 2002 in Burgundy where she had the privilege of working with Pinot Noir from the illustrious Clos de Vougeot vineyard, and in 2006 she worked the harvest in the Mendoza, Argentina. Simone’s breadth of experiences has forged an appreciation for site and the unique interplay that art and science contribute to revealing the purest expression of terroir. Simone has been with La Follette since its inception, and continues to craft wines that give voice to singular terroirs.
Look for a bouquet with wild flowers, raspberries and chicory with earthy hints of juniper berry and forest floor. As the wine opens, warm sandalwood emerges and a lasting, soft, yet energetic palate coats the mouth with red plums and more berries. Supple tannins frame late-palate notes of gentle oak spice, bark and tamari. This is excellent California Pinot, classic, nuanced and satisfying.
