High Note is a wonderful new discovery here at the Bottle Shop. Crafted from a blend of the finest vineyards in Uco Valley including Vista Flores, La Consulta, Altamira, Eugenio Bustos and Gualtallary, when it comes to vineyard locations, Altitude is everything. Altitude is essential to providing the vineyards with intense sunlight and cool temperatures. This perfect paradox allows the winemaker at Vista del Sur in Mendoza to craft a Malbec with a deep violet hue, smooth velvety texture & vibrant fruit flavors, and name it 'High Note'. Vista del Sur is a state-of-the-art winery high in the Andes foothills of Argentina’s famed Uco Valley of Mendoza. Ranging in altitude from 3,300 to 5,000 feet, Vista del Sur’s vineyards are among the highest in the world and enjoy the perfect combination of elements for growing the finest Malbec. Intense desert sunlight, very cool nightly temperatures, low humidity and dry, sandy soil with excellent drainage provide the fruit with extended hang times that result in a slow, balanced ripening cycle with good acidity and concentrated flavors without excessive sugar. These conditions also help reduce vine disease and provide a long, dry growing season producing low yields of small grapes with concentrated flavor, color and tannins. While other wineries around the world are planned to create multiple varietals using the same equipment, Vista del Sur was designed from vine to bottle to enhance the quality of the Malbec it produces.
Grapes are sourced from five vineyards with sandy loam soils, ranging in elevation 3,300 - 5,000 feet above sea level. Vista Flores vineyard has flavors of spice, red fruits and minerality. La Consulta adds black fruit and mid-palate weight while Altamira's fruit has notes of violets. Eugenio Bustos vineyard offers racy acidity and floral notes while adding to the violet color. Gualtallary vineyard, at the highest altitude, brings deep purple color and additional floral and black fruit notes balanced with acidity.
Fernando Buscema is a fourth-generation winemaker whose early childhood memories are set in his grandfather’s vineyards. Buscema earned his bachelor's degree in enology and food science from the Universidad Maza in Mendoza, where he graduated top of his class. His winemaking experience was gained through his work at reputable wineries all over the world including Vicenza, Italy; Napa Valley, California; and Mendoza, Argentina. At Vista del Sur, Buscema is devoted exclusively to Malbec where he remains at the forefront of oenological research and development.

I prefer the fresher and more vibrant 2020 High Note Malbec to the 2019 I also tasted next to it. The wine is juicy and young, with round tannins and a soft mouthfeel. It's medium-bodied, varietal and easy to drink.
