Altano Douro White 2017
Altano is produced by the Symington family, known for their long and distinguished history of producing premium Vintage Ports in the Douro region, under labels such as Graham's, Warre's, Dow's and Quinta do Vesuvio. As a natural extension of their interest in and dedication to making Port, the Symingtons began producing Douro DOC table wines seriously in 1999, applying their skill and expertise to ensure that the results reflect their tradition of making the world's finest wines. Today seven members of the Symington family are involved in the business, personally managing all aspects of winemaking from the vineyard to the final bottling of the wines.
We tasted and loved this Douro white with its bright, zippy style, and we encourage lovers of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to give it a whirl. Wildflower, grapefruit and tropical fruit aromas lead to more of the same in the mouth, with a fresh, lively, crisp acidity. For sure a modern interpretation of a Douro white which we believe will please alot of white wine drinkers.
Wine SpectatorFresh grapefruit, gooseberry and citrus notes are vibrant and aromatic in this youthful white, with green herb, mineral and spice details on the clean finish. Drink now through 2020. 400 cases imported.
Wine AdvocateThe 2017 Altano Branco (the blue label) is 20% each of Malvasia Fina and Moscatel Galego, with a field blend of Viosinho and Rabigato comprising the remaining 60% of the juice. It is unoaked and comes in at 13.1% alcohol. In this big 2017 vintage, it is always unclear what is going to happen to the whites in particular. This has plenty of solidity for its modest price, but it keeps its verve and freshness pretty well too. In fact, it has an herbal overlay, showing some green, while the Moscatel adds its typical aromatic flair. Overall, this does great this year. I'm not so sure how well or for how long it will last, but if you drink it now and in the near future, you'll have a lovely bargain in a fresh white. It's worth leaning up on this today.
Wine EnthusiastThe style of this wine, with its soft texture punctuated with acidity, is immediately attractive. It has lemon flavors along hints of pineapple and white fruits. The texture, lightly mineral, gives the wine its good balance. Drink the wine from 2019.
