The wine of Château Barde-Haut offers an admirably balanced dialogue between power and freshness, richness and elegance. Château Barde-Haut is an A.O.C. Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé with vineyard soils composed of clay covering limestone on the plateau of Saint-Emilion. Planted to 80% Merlot - 20% Cabernet Franc, the farming is conducted with sustainable methods, biological control and has a Certified High Environmental Value 3. All of the grapes are handpicked, fermentation is performed in concrete and stainless steel tanks, and aging takes place in new French oak barrels, 18-24 months. 70,000 bottles made per year.

A medieval town, Saint Emilion was classified as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999. Saint Emilion is one of the most beautiful wine regions where, for nearly 1,000 years, generations of growers have devoted themselves to producing exceptional wines. It is with the benefit of this rich heritage, and with a view to preserving their ancestors’ legacy, that the owners perpetuate the winegrowing tradition at Château Barde-Haut. In this 250-year-old property, Patrice Lévèque, an impassioned winegrower, and his wife, Hélène Garcin, are enthusiastically committed to working to high standards to offer great wines from past, present and future vintages.

Incorporating 20% Cabernet Franc, the Merlot-dominated 2016 Château Barde Haut is one of the darker colored wines in the lineup. It offers a Grand Cru Burgundy-like purity and elegance as well as beautiful cassis and darker fruits, smoked earth, black cherries, and damp earth aromas and flavors. An awesome Saint Emilion, the 2015 Château Barde-Haut showed even better on this occasion than on release. A huge nose of sweet crème de cassis, jammy blackberries, violets, leather, and dried herbs gives way to a full-bodied wine that has a great mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, not a hard edge to be found, and a great, great finish. I love it even today, yet it has a full two decades of prime drinking ahead of it.

Readers will find a rich, flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here, but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks, graphite, lavender, blackberry, plum, and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all, the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent, dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, wet earth and black tea. Full-bodied, dense and layered with medium, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and power. Needs three or four years to start coming together." 2/18.

A restrained style, with a core of damson plum, raspberry and cassis flavors held in check for now by fine-grained cedar, sanguine and iron hints. There's racy acidity running underneath and a long, focused finish, so cellar this to let the two sides meld fully. Best from 2022 through 2032. 5,000 cases made.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Barde-Haut gives up notions of plum preserves, potpourri and baked cherries with underlying Chinese five spice and cigar box hints. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm backbone of grainy tannins and background freshness supporting the spicy black fruits, finishing on a lingering earthy note.
