Robert Parker raves : 'O’Shaughnessy is one of my favorite under-the-radar Napa estates.' O'Shaughnessy is a 100 acre hillside property owned by Betty O'Shaughnessy Woolls and her husband Paul Woolls, who planted 29 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon between 1997 and 2002. They also cultivate 6 acres of blending varieties: Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere and St. Macaire. In pursuit of maximizing flavor, they utilized several different root stocks and clones for their Cabernet plantings.

Founding winemaker, Sean Capiaux, has established an impressive and notable career over the past 26 years at prominent wineries around the globe. He graduated from California State University, Fresno in the late-80's and began his career at Jordan Winery. Sean traveled to Perth, Australia to work on the winemaking team at the Houghton Winery and later returned to the United States to become the assistant winemaker at Pine Ridge Winery in the Stags Leap district. Peter Michael Winery tapped him to become their assistant winemaker where he worked for four years. Sean spent several years as a bicoastal winemaker attending to wines both on Long Island and in California before coming to O'Shaughnessy.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is blended of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 3% St. Macaire, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it reveals notions of scorched earth, tar, tilled black soil and fungi over a core of blackcurrant cordial, aniseed, dark chocolate and espresso plus a waft of tobacco. Full-bodied, concentrated and very earthy in the mouth, the rich, black fruits are superbly framed by firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

Jeb Dunnuck Starting with the base 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, it's an interesting blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 3% St. Macaire, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It offers a brilliantly pure, seamless bouquet of crème de cassis, toasted spice, new saddle leather, and leafy herbs and lavender. Deep, rich, and multi-dimensional on the palate, it's a full-bodied, layered, awesome entry level wine that can be drunk today with tons of pleasure or cellared for 15-20 years.

VinousThe 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgeous. Vibrant and focused, with tons of savory energy, the Napa Valley Cabernet is once again a huge overachiever in this range. An exotic mélange of black cherry, plum, pomegranate, blood orange, chocolate, savory herb, leather and sage builds into the deep, resonant finish. Most of this fruit is young-vine Cabernet from the Wools Ranch on Mt. Veeder. O'Shaughnessy's Napa Valley Cabernet is the hidden gem in this range and also one of the very finest wines in its peer group. Don't miss it. (AG)
