Cannubi is the most famous and well-known Cru (vineyard) in the entire Barolo region.  The Scavino family has been producing a Cannubi since 1985, crafted from 100% Nebbiolo planted in 1946 on the central crest of the Cannubi hill. The soils of Limestone-dominant Tortonian, have a South-southeast orientation, at 290 meters of elevation.  The harvest is done by hand, normally in the second 1/2 of October.  100% indigenous yeasts are used and the wine is aged one month in French oak barrels and further 23 months in large casks, plus 8 months in stainless steel followed by 6 months in bottle.  Low yield of this vineyard is due to a special combination of natural factors, one of which is the old age of the vines assuring a unique quality. Here comes the concentration and richness of this Barolo where the charm of Nebbiolo is fully expressed. Harmonious and very fine texture.

*Note: the Cannubi is a vineyard that the Scavino family rented from 1985 to 2018. The last year of production will be the 2018 (making this 2016 even more collectible and rare).

It will not be produced after the 2018 vintage, but this 2016 vintage awards us with first-rate quality and precision, making for a memorable send-off. This expression from Cannubi offers tight and aromatic fruit with wild cherry, rose petal and powdered licorice root. It also shows a slightly dusty or mineral quality with finely nuanced tannins and a tapered or streamlined mouthfeel that adds to its delicate elegance. The effect here is polished with glossy intensity.

VinousThe 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a striking wine. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2016 has it all. Rose petal, mint, star anise, blood orange and raspberry open up first, followed by a cascade of red fruit and floral notes that literally soar out of the glass. The Cannubi possesses tremendous textural resonance in a style that balances the sensuality of this site with a good deal of structure. It is also one of the wines in this lineup that was aged entirely in cask.
