David Trousselle is a tiny producer in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune of Burgundy. While this appellation is quite vast, his vineyards are extremely well located, nestled in a valley between Saint Aubin and Saint Romain. Given the location of Trousselle’s vineyards, Chardonnay does extremely well, but he also has vines in a protected and warm valley in which there are certain sectors where Pinot Noir ripens really well. And he also produces tiny amounts of this delicious Aligoté.
The vinification here is quite simple. Grapes are hand harvested, and brought to the cellar where they are sorted prior to fermentation. Whites are barrel fermented in the classical Burgundian fashion, 12 months in neutral oak for the Aligoté. Reds are de-stemmed, and then given a very gentle maceration/fermentation of 15-20 days and raised in barrel.
In Burgundy today, there is increasing interest in the so-called “lesser” appellations of Burgundy, as they offer tremendous value compared to the ever increasing prices in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. So many top Burgundian producers now own or have their eye on vineyards, not only in the Hautes Côtes, but also in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Macônnais.
Trousselle's early success has allowed him to expand and evolve his business. He and his wife recently new buildings for vinification and storage -- liberating them from the constraints of a tiny production room -- and they invested in new farming equipment and materials that facilitate organic farming. These improvements reflect the dreams and ambitious of this young, dynamic domaine. Trouselle’s wines are not only beautifully rendered and amazing values, but they are also a glimpse into the future of Burgundy where over-achieving and under-appreciated regions will demonstrate their ability to shine.
This Aligoté is from vines planted in 1990 from 1.67 hectares in Trousselle's home village of Orches in the upper cliffs of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. The vines are southeast-facing and the soils are composed of clay-limestone. All of the vines are organically farmed, all the grapes hand-harvested, a direct pressing is followed by temperature controlled settling of the lees and this Aligoté is aged 12 months in neutral French oak. Only 1500 bottles made (125 cases).

Zippy, fresh and floral with a gorgeous mineral core, look for ripe lemon, tangerine, apricot skin and white flower petals in the nose and mouth. This is a tasty aperitif or to serve with fish, cheeses or charcuterie. If you love Chablis or any good white Burgundy, this is a charming little gem for parties and everyday drinking.
