Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg represents to many the very pinnacle that Pinot Noir can achieve. Dr. Georges Mugneret assumed the reins of of this property in the late 1950s, shortly after beginning his career as an ophthalmologist. Over the ensuing thirty years, between tending eyes and vines, he added incredible parcels of 1er and Grand Cru vineyards before his sudden and tragic death in 1988. His wife Jacqueline and daughters Marie-Christine & Marie-Andrée decided to continue the legacy started by Dr. Mugneret. The transparency of this domaine’s wines reveals the nuances and idiosyncrasies of their individual terroirs, which has been one of the main reasons that Mugneret-Gibourg has become one of the superstars of Burgundy. Fine red burgundy such as this pair exceptionally well with duck breast with dried cherries, wild mushroom tart, grilled steak with potatoes, and French cheeses such as gruyere.

“….in my opinion, the wines of Mugneret-Gibourg epitomize everything one could desire in Pinot Noir….They just know how to make pure, effortless, delineated, tensile, terroir-driven wine that is not just complex and thought-provoking, but just delicious to drink. That’s the trouble tasting here. You just want to grab as many bottles from their bins as you can, flee out of the door yelling, “I don’t care…call the gendarmes…at least I’ve got my Ruchottes-Chambertin.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots was matured in 50% new oak, and the vineyard was heavily damaged by frost. Normally there are 26 barrels, and this year there are 18 barrels. It has a deeper and more complex bouquet than the Vignes Rondes, with pure black cherries, blueberry and subtle violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth texture, perfectly judged acidity, harmonious and pure, with black cherries, strawberry pastilles and a fine vein of minerals toward the finish. Superb.
