Fattoria di Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico 2016

Fattoria di Fèlsina has long been one of the great names in Tuscany. Based in the Chianti Classico region, Fèlsina produces one of the finest ranges of ageworthy and complex Chianti wines. Unlike many of their neighbors, Fèlsina has never succumbed to the temptation to produce “new age” wines from their fine Chianti vineyards, and continues to grow solely Sangiovese here, rather than dabble with international-styled blends that include Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Consequently, their elegant yet intensely flavored Chiantis place them firmly among the top handful of Chianti producers, with the best vintages of their top Riserva Chiantis often approaching Brunello di Montalcino in terms of complexity and potential for longevity.
This Chianti Classico is from the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, northeast of Siena and south of the Chianti Classico zone. The vineyards are 350 - 420m in elevation, and the soils consist of quartzitic blue-grey sandstone mixed with sand strata, calcareous alberese mixed with alluvial pebbles.

James SucklingThis is fragrant and floral with dark berries on the nose. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. A driven and linear Chianti Classico. The backbone of fresh acidity gives this focus. Drink now or hold.
Wine AdvocateThis is an excellent vintage in Chianti Classico that shows especially well in the simple, more accessible wines such as this. The 2016 Chianti Classico Berardenga delivers the power and density of its territory. The southern side of the appellation often shows the richest expressions of Sangiovese. This wine opens to sweet aromas of dark fruit, cherry and plum. The wine shows a slightly savory side as well with spice and dried terracotta that recalls the gray gravel soils of the region. Bay leaf, cola and chopped mint appear as subtle background notes. Some 260,000 bottles were made.
Wine SpectatorA smoky, sweet, herb-, cherry- and currant-laced red, with dusty tannins adding support. Starts out rich, turning lean and slightly austere on the long finish of tea and sweet smoke. Best from 2020 through 2033. 21,666 cases made.
