Owned and managed by the new generation, Matrot is producing classic wines with a few subtle modern changes. We love the antique, traditional label of the house. The Matrot domaine is one of the oldest estate-bottlers in Burgundy and one of the largest and most important properties located in Meursault. Their Meursault and Montrachet wines are well represented on the wine lists of France’s greatest restaurants, and have been distributed in the United States for over thirty years. Thierry Matrot and his wife, Pascale are the owners. The domaine farms about 3/4 of its 45 acres, with an average age of vines at 30 years.

Thierry Matrot works towards the achievement of one major goal: to produce a wine that retains its elegance while maximizing both the fruit and the native essence of the soil. In order to accomplish this goal, he relies upon his wine making philosophy: “wine is made in the vineyards – and far less than people think, in the cellar." 100% estate-bottling has been practiced at the domaine since Thierry’s grandfather, Joseph Matrot, took it over in 1908.

(picked on August 29; no new oak): Pale bright yellow. Discreet aromas of lemon zest and candied lime peel, plus a soupçon of hazelnut. A step up in concentration and texture over the preceding samples, conveying greater breadth and a more glyceral mouthfeel without any undue weightiness. This lovely wine should offer early appeal owing to its texture and ripeness but its persistent vibrant finish and hint of salinity suggest that it will evolve gracefully. Matrot made just four barrels of wine from 30 ares, as half of their vines in Combettes are quite old and produce very small quantities of fruit.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is also showing well after a year in bottle, opening up in the glass with notes of fresh peach, crisp green apple, white flowers and warm pastry. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, with a muscular and concentrated core that has gained in depth and a long, precise finish. Drink Date 2022 - 2040
