The name Querciabella means 'beautiful oak', a reference to the beautiful oak trees lining this great estate in Tuscany. With 69 hectares (171 acres) of prime Chianti Classico vineyards – located in the communes of Greve, Radda and Gaiole – and 32 hectares (79 acres) in Maremma on Tuscany’s unspoiled Etruscan coast, Querciabella's vineyards represent the largest extensions of biodynamically farmed (certified organic) vineyards in Italy. This contributes extraordinary biodiversity to local and surrounding ecosystems and serves as a sanctuary for thriving numbers of honeybee colonies.

The owners are also proud of the lush forests that surround their vineyards on the Ruffoli and Radda hillsides, whose presence not only adds to the abundant biodiversity found there, but also offers protection against cross-contamination from conventional farms.  Monovarietal olive groves complete the estate, adding additional richness to the soil and giving a nod to the history and tradition of the Chianti Classico region.

Like the wild, untamed coastline that borders Querciabella's vineyards in Maremma, this wine Mongrana is lively, fruity, and intense. With lifted aromatics and charming drinkability, it is a perfect companion for pasta, white meats and panini, or with aged cheeses and cured meats. Made of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot.

A certified organic wine, the Querciabella 2020 Maremma Toscana Mongrana is 50% Sangiovese with the rest of the blend consisting of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are good amounts of each variety, as the wine shows the breezy freshness of Sangiovese next to the richness and voluptuous flavors of the other two grapes. Refined in cement and stainless steel, this is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with lots of bright fruit and cherry. Production is an ample 85,000 bottles.

A fresh, cherry- and blackberry-flavored red, with accents of graphite and earth. Finishes with a hint of bell pepper and lightly astringent tannins. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2026. 7,250 cases made, 3,373 cases imported.

The 2020 Mongrana is a soft, supple Maremma red to drink now and over the next few years, while the red cherry/plum fruit remains vibrant. Mongrana is certainly a pleasant, affordable quaffer, but not more. It's hard to see what the point is for Querciabella to even bother making a wine like this.
