Château-Calon-Ségur Saint Estèphe de Calon-Ségur 2016
The 2016 vintage of this lovely 'everyday' wine from the great Calon Ségur estate is a classic expression of red Bordeaux. 'Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur' is the third wine of the estate, and the second wine is called 'Marquis de Calon Ségur'. 2016 is an excellent vintage for Saint-Estèphe, so this is a particularly great value. Mainly produced from the estate's young vines, it evokes freshness, lightness and efficiency. But make no mistake: its signature in the heart is most definitively present. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Cabernet Franc; the 2016 is a classic red with balanced fruit/tannin/acidity, with black fruits and stony earth notes supported by silky tannins and a touch of spice. An elegant acidity gives the wine freshness and has the potential to age extremely well.
Historic records show that Calon Ségur was in existence as far back as 1147, when it was owned by Monseigneur de Calon. He was an important Bishop in the community. This makes Chateau Calon Ségur a contender for the oldest property in Saint Estephe. Eventually the Medoc property came to be owned by Nicolas Alexandre de Segur. Which as you can see is where the name Calon Segur comes from. After passing through generations, the estate became the property of the famous Marquis de Ségur. De Ségur is an important figure in Bordeaux history, not only for his ownership of numerous top Bordeaux estates of the day, (he also owned Lafite and Latour) but de Ségur is credited with uttering the words that spawned the idea behind the heart shaped logo of Calon Ségur : “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” That famous saying lives forever on the label of Chateau Calon Segur, where the drawing of a heart is prominently featured on the logo.
