Kaiken Ultra Malbec 2015
Kaikén is located in the famous Mendoza region of Argentina, originally built in 1920. Aurelio Montes, founder of the Chilean winery Bodega Montes, made several trips across the Andes until, in 2001 he decided to also produce wines in Mendoza, a generous land filled with superb vines and hardworking people. In this pursuit, he made many, many cross-border trips in small planes, much like the Caiquén, a wild goose from Patagonia that flies across the Andes between Argentina and Chile. In 2011, Aurelio's son Aurelio Jr. moved his family to Argentina to oversee the winemaking at Kaikén, instituting sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming practices.
The fruit for Kaikén Malbec Ultra was sourced from the Uco Valley. Variations in altitude and soil type result in grapes with distinct characteristics that give unique and highly-complex wines. Grapes are sourced from three vineyards with unique characteristics at different altitudes: Vistaflores, Gualtallary and Altamira. In spite of location and altitude variations, all three soil types are similar: alluvial soil with some sand and silt on surface layers on top of very rocky layers that provide excellent drainage and ideal conditions to grow highly concentrated grapes.
Made of 100% low yielding Malbec (only 3-3 1/2 tons/acre), barrel aged for 12 months, this deep brilliant red-colored wine with purplish tones displays rich aromas. The nose has interesting spicy and floral notes —a clear expression of a cool year—intertwined with black fruit aromas reminiscent of blueberries and blackberries that show this variety’s great typicity. Good structure and soft tannins call for a second glass. The finish is fresh, complex, and persistent with fruit notes and subtle spicy undertones of rosemary, thyme, and dry flowers.
James SucklingBeautiful aromas of roses, plums and blueberries. Subtle. Medium to full body, very fine tannins and a clean finish. Wonderful finesse and polish. Shows the elegance of the vintage in a very positive way.
Wine SpectatorTop 100: 2017, Rank: 45 : Dense and rich-tasting, with a muscular mix of dark currant and black olive flavors that are supported by firm tannins. Cocoa powder and slate notes fill the finish, along with peppery hints. Drink now through 2022.
