Chateau Haut Beausejour, located not far from Chateau Phelan Segur in St. Estephe, is owned by Jean Claude Rouzaud, the owner of the famed Roederer Champagne house. The Rouzaud family have extensive interests in Bordeaux as they also own Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac and 2 other estates in the Saint Estephe appellation. In the 1990's, the family created one large estate by combing Chateaux Picard and Beausejour , thus, Chateau Haut Beausejour was born. They use the same technical winemaking team and philosophy as their sister property, Chateau de Pez. Some of the changes include manual sorting, green harvesting and most importantly, increasing the percentage of Merlot as well as using more new oak for aging.

Wine Enthusiast90-92. Barrel Sample. This wine is spicy, ripe and gently textured. With hints of stalkiness, the black currant fruits are light and crisp with a squeeze of blackberry juice coming through. It is more about fruit than structure.

Wine AdvocateThe 2015 Haut-Beauséjour is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. It has a tightly wound, slightly subdued bouquet that just feels a little static in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, quite fine tannin, well balanced and detailed with truffle and cedar-infused black fruit. It might lack the substance of its counterparts south in Pauillac, yet I still consider this to be a well-crafted wine that should offer a decade of pleasure. 88-90
