In the 1970's, the time & commitment spent by the young Alejandro Fernández finally came to fruition. After 10 years of hard work, the modest 16th century stone-built bodega planted the seed for what was to become one of the most prestigious bodegas in Spain. The Tempranillo vineyards, the “queen of grapes”, the delicate variety so skillfully mastered by Alejandro, furnish the Castilian soils that are watered by the River Duero. The vines, which are always trained on low espalier trellises, "to better capture the heat from the ground" grow in poor, well-drained soils, composed of sand and gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil, an ideal combination for rootstock. With the help of the wind, the rain and the sun the plants produce aromas and flavors unique to Tempranillo. From his 200 hectares of vineyards, Alejandro makes wines in which the wood has great respect for the fruit. Over time, the wines become more complex and nuanced without losing their original character; a phenomenon that has made the name Tinto Pesquera synonymous with fine wine from Ribera del Duero.
Pesquera wines are always made from the whole fruit, after destemming. Temperature controlled fermentation lasts two to three weeks. Afterwards, and without clarifying, the grape pulp is directly transferred to an astute and subtle combination of French and American oak barrels that have been subject to various degrees of toasting. Where, in between frequent pump-overs, the wines are left to stand. Tinto Pesquera Crianza is aged in American oak for 18 months then six months in bottle while Reservas and Grandes Reservas are aged for no less than 24 months in oak.
On the nose, the 2014 Crianza boasts hints of fruit aromas such as red berries, vanilla, licorice and mineral. Smooth, rounded tannins create a silky wine with ripe fruits intertwined with the subtle smokiness of wood. Ready to drink from time of purchase, you may also decant 30 minutes before serving as the wine could contain sediment due to the natural winemaking process. Perfect with game birds and other products such as Iberian ham from acorn-fed pigs.
Firm and focused, but still fresh, this red delivers cherry and berry flavors accented by vanilla, spice and light herbal notes. Offers good density, but without heaviness. Harmonious. Drink now through 2024. 5,800 cases imported.
